How to manage large music files collection?

I have a large collection of mp3, it is about 80gb (not so large :-p). The problem is files in the my music folder and in the iTunes/iPod does not tally. I couldn't figure out which one is reported the correct amount of files. If you guys/gals out there could help me with your suggestion, i would be very grateful.
