Why do writers feel the need to make all children annoyingly precocious and snarky brats?

This is exactly why clic books like Little Women, Little House on the Prairie, and Anne of Green Gables are still in print and still beloved more than 100 years after they were published. Cynicism, snark, and sarcasm have a superficial appeal, but the bedrock values that underlie the books I mention are eternal.
